Battle Born

Konrad Ehresman

He says, “pick your battles.”

and I scoff, as if I didn’t answer

to Conflict,

as if I didn’t don chainmail

the first time I looked at a boy,

as if I didn’t beg back alley doctors

to sharpen tongue to sword,

sometimes life is combat,

to exist, to breathe, to be

picking your battles

is a luxury

it is for those

with nothing at stake
